Ontario could see up to 1,000 private pot shops after cannabis legalization

Image
Ontario could have up to 1,000 private pot shops after recreational cannabis is legalized, the province’s Progressive Conservatives said Thursday, significantly more stores than planned under the previous Liberal government. While introducing legislation to create a regulatory regime for cannabis sales, the government said it expected a flood of applications from those looking to run the private stores that will open next April and noted that they would be vetted very carefully by the province’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission. “There will be, I’m sure, a lot of applications to the AGCO and they’re going to have a lot of work in order to do the due diligence that’s required,” said Attorney General Caroline Mulroney. “ I don’t expect that all applications will be granted immediately.” There will be no caps on the number of stores when the retail model launches next spring, but government’s legislation allows for flexibility when it comes to the concentration of stores in individual mar...

Facebook says 50M user accounts affected by security breach

Image
Facebook says it recently discovered a security breach affecting nearly 50 million user accounts. The hack is the latest setback for Facebook during a year of tumult for the global social media service. In a blog post , the company says hackers exploited a bug that affected its “View As” feature, which lets people see what their profiles look like to someone else. That would let attackers steal the “access tokens” Facebook uses to keep people logged in. Possession of those tokens would allow attackers to “seize control” of user accounts, Facebook said. Facebook says it has taken steps to fix the security problem and alerted law enforcement. To deal with the issue, Facebook reset some logins, so 90 million people have been logged out and will have to log in again. That includes anyone who has been subject to a “View As” lookup in the past year. Facebook says it doesn’t know who is behind the attacks or where they’re based. In a call with reporters on Friday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg sai...

Only 12% were concerned about using public WiFi, despite it being a common entry point for cyber criminals, and just 4% were concerned about their smart-home devices being a vulnerability. “In this day and age, anyone is susceptible to falling victim of a cyberattack,” said Fran O’Brien, division president of Chubb North America Personal Risk Services. “Given what’s at stake, individuals should be taking every precaution they can to mitigate risk.” Chubb found that 60% of respondents were concerned about their social security numbers being compromised, and 30% were concerned about their medical records. Forest fires, pests pose threat to forestry sector growth, federal report says

Image
A new government report on the state of Canadian forests shows that the area burned last year by fires jumped nearly three-fold compared to the year before. In 2017, almost 3.4 million hectares of forest burned, up from the 1.4 million in 2016, said the latest analysis from Natural Resources Canada. The numbers may be even higher in next year’s report. British Columbia saw a record-setting year in 2017 for fires, and then surpassed that record earlier this year, according to local officials. Fires affected less than 1% of Canada’s 347 million hectares of forest, and were less of a problem than pests, which impacted about 4.5% of all forested areas, down from 5% in 2015. The two threats to Canada’s forest may only grow over the coming years as climate change creates conditions for more and stronger fires, as well as the spread of pests. “If it gets drier—and we think that it’s going to get warmer—you’re creating conditions that could lead to more fire, longer fire seasons,” said J...

Ontario won’t cap pot shops once private cannabis marketplace is in place

Image
The Ontario government says it will not put a cap on pot shops when it starts licensing and regulating the province’s private cannabis retail marketplace. The Progressive Conservative government says a bill set to be introduced Thursday will appoint the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario as regulator for the marketplace, giving it the power to grant—and potentially revoke—licences as well as enforce provincial rules on cannabis sales. The province said Wednesday that anyone looking to open a pot shop will have to apply for both a retail-operator licence and a retail store authorization for each potential location. Breaching provincial rules on cannabis sales would preclude someone from ever obtaining a licence in the future, it said. “Any engagement with organized crime, any record of providing youth cannabis, any of that would bar you from participating in the private cannabis market,” Finance Minister Vic Fedeli said. “If you are still operating an illegal retail operation...

Picking the Top 10

Image
Do you remember what it felt like being a kid? Sure you do. You may be reading an insurance magazine, but you’re not that old. When I was a kid, I remember thinking 40-year-olds were ancient, but now I realize we’re just in our prime at this age. (Unless you’re a professional athlete—then you really are ancient.) Yes, dear broker, it’s that time of year again: time for our annual Top 10 Under 40. People often ask me how we select our Top 10. Well, it’s no mean feat. Every year, we get flooded with nominations that come in from across the country. When we first started the Top 10 Under 40, I asked to be notified every time we received a submission. It didn’t take long before my inbox was flooded, and I had to ask the team to stop the notifications! But the truth is, it’s not me or my staff who pick the Top 10. We’re not in the insurance business—we’re in the media business—so it wouldn’t be right for us to be judging brokers on their performance or their reputation in the industry....

Who Will Be the Industry Leaders of Tomorrow?

Image
The number of older and retiring managers in insurance is one key factor contributing to the looming management and leadership gap our industry faces. The other factor is that new and different leadership skills—such as creativity, flexibility and adaptability—are needed in disruptive times such as these. Management roles impacted by retirements With a median retirement age of 60 in the industry, the boomer cohort—which currently represents 27% of the industry—will likely be retired by 2027. That’s 33,750 people exiting the industry’s workforce of 125,000, with more than half projected to retire before 2022. When we look at people retiring from management roles in the industry, our research indicates that 35% of all managers will likely retire by 2027. Senior management roles will take the biggest hit: 52% of senior managers will retire by 2027. In the past, new senior management has been supplied by a direct pipeline of qualified candidates from middle and front-line management. H...
